The Concentration in African-American Studies prepares students for further undergraduate studies in African American history and culture and in disciplines addressing ethnic studies of all types. It gives them a solid Liberal Arts background for positions that involve decision and policy making in firms, NGOs, and governmental agencies that deal with ethically diverse populations. The program instills an understanding of the particular historical and cultural issues of race and ethnicity in the United States while providing general knowledge of global trends. Students pursuing an African-American Studies concentration learn to relate specific knowledge to global trends and issues. Program Outcomes: Students who complete this concentration will be able to: 1. Engage in learning activities that promote teamwork. 2. Demonstrate self-management skills necessary to succeed in academic and professional environments. 3. Synthesize connections between the college environment and their personal and professional lives. 4. Evaluate diverse historical trends, events, institutions, scientific perspectives, and social systems. 5. Demonstrate an understanding of the particular historical and cultural issues of race and ethnicity in the United States. 6. Demonstrate an understanding of the particular historical and cultural issues of race and ethnicity in global trends. 7. Relate specific knowledge of issues in African-American studies to global trends and issues. Students planning to transfer to another institution should discuss their plans with a BRCC advisor and with an advisor at the receiving institution to assure that credits earned atBRCC will transfer.
To receive this degree, the student must: • have a cumulative GPA of 2.00 or better in all credits to be used towards the degree, • earn a “C” or better in major courses, in ENGL 101 and ENGL 102, and in courses that are prerequisites for other courses; • take at least 12 hours at the 200 level; and • complete the coursework listed below.

Students must earn a “C” or better in ENGL 223 and African-American concentration courses/electives, choosing 15 hours from the courses below, in addition to meeting all the requirements for the AA in Liberal Arts.
