BRCC Business Graduate Comes Full Circle Print E-mail

Baton Rouge Community College's (BRCC) Career Center provides guidance through assessment to students that are in transition, beginning a new phase in their journey, or simply looking for opportunities to grow and explore.

With that being said, you would think that a trip to the Career Center would be high on the priority list for most students, especially those nearing graduation, but unfortunately that is not always the case.

In Jaime Sherman's case, it was not until a few months after graduation that she realized she needed some help, and she contacted the BRCC Career Center.  Through a few meetings with a career counselor, she identified some short and long term career goals and began a plan to achieve those goals.  One of those included working with her current employer to begin adding additional responsibilities in her job which would allow her to move in a new career direction.

Over the next 15 months, Sherman developed new job skills, participated in additional professional development  to add to her Associate of Business degree, and kept in touch with the BRCC Career Center to monitor opportunities arising in her area of interest.  Eventually, her diligence paid off, and she was submitted for a job posting through the Career Center.  It was with a long term Career Center employer partner, All Star Automotive Group.

Sherman says that if she had not worked with the Career Center, this opportunity would not have been available to her.  She is now working in her career field and her typical day consists of advertising and marketing, budget meetings, developing and executing marketing strategies, and planning promotional events.  She recently represented All Star Automotive at the BRCC Career & Job Fair this semester, as the employer.

Her advice to future BRCC graduates is to stay connected, and take advantage of BRCC's Career Center. She also encourages students to get involved in organizations within the community.

Congratulations Jaime Sherman, a 2013 BRCC Business graduate!
