Baton Rouge Community College (BRCC) men’s basketball team has captured the Louisiana Community Colleges Athletic Conference 2025 regular season championship with two games remaining in conference play. The Bears clinched the LCCAC championship with a 95-76 win at home over Southern University-Shreveport. This marks the Bears men’s second consecutive year being crowned conference champions under Head Coach Byron Starks since taking the helm two years ago.
“We’ve gone through three phases,” said Coach Starks. “The first phase was the come together, which was the beginning of the year. The second phase was to stick together because I knew we would face challenges with our tough schedule. And the third phase which we are in now, is the win together.”

The Bears are currently on a 10-game win streak with an overall record of 16-8. Coach Starks has made an immediate impact on the program in just his second year, losing only two conference games in two seasons.
“Coach Starks has elevated our men’s basketball program in every area,” said Brock Kantrow, BRCC Director of Athletics. “He’s done an excellent job recruiting quality young men, developing a culture that’s reflective of helping each other get better and providing opportunities that extend beyond basketball.”
In his first year at BRCC, Starks and the Bears finished the season winning their last seven out of 10 games and advancing to the Region XXIII Quarterfinals. The Bears finished with an overall record of 14-13 and 4-2 in conference play, earning them the LCCAC conference championship and an automatic bid to the playoff. The Bears won their first round game before losing a close one in the Region XXIII Quarterfinals. Starks was named LCCAC Coach of the Year for the 2023-24 season, along with six players being named to the LCCAC All-Conference team.
