BATON ROUGE - In a significant national leadership appointment that elevates both Louisiana and community college education across the country, Dr. Willie E. Smith Sr., Chancellor of Baton Rouge Community College, has been selected by peers nationwide to serve on the Board of Directors for the American Association of Community Colleges and has now been appointed to the organization’s Executive Committee, where he will help lead national initiatives focused on workforce training and program initiatives.
The appointment places Dr. Smith among a select group of community college leaders helping shape the future of workforce development, economic mobility, and postsecondary education policy in the United States.
As a member of the Executive Committee, Dr. Smith will help guide strategic priorities related to workforce alignment, industry partnerships, career and technical education, and program initiatives designed to meet evolving labor market demands nationwide. His leadership role comes at a time when community colleges are increasingly viewed as central to addressing workforce shortages and expanding access to high-demand careers.
“This appointment is not only a tremendous personal honor, but also a recognition of the transformational work happening at Baton Rouge Community College and across Louisiana,” said Dr. Smith. “Community colleges are at the center of economic development and opportunity in America. I look forward to working with leaders from across the nation to strengthen workforce pathways, expand innovation, and ensure students are equipped for the jobs of today and tomorrow.”
The American Association of Community Colleges represents nearly 1,000 community colleges nationwide and serves as the leading advocacy organization for the nation’s community colleges and the more than 10 million students they serve annually. Selection to its Board of Directors is considered one of the highest distinctions in the two-year college sector, with members chosen by fellow institutional leaders from across the country.
Under Dr. Smith’s leadership, Baton Rouge Community College has experienced significant momentum in workforce training, enrollment growth, industry partnerships, and student success initiatives. The college has expanded programming in nursing and allied health, information technology, skilled trades, and other high-demand sectors critical to Louisiana’s economy.
Dr. Smith has also become widely recognized for advancing a modern vision of community colleges — one that treats academic education and workforce training as a unified strategy for economic advancement and regional prosperity. His leadership has emphasized employer partnerships, student access, innovation, and aligning education directly with workforce and industry needs.
National colleagues say his appointment reflects the growing influence of forward-thinking community college leaders who understand both the educational and economic role institutions play in their communities.
“Dr. Smith represents the future of community college leadership,” one colleague noted. “He understands how institutions can serve as engines of workforce development, student success, and community transformation simultaneously.”
The appointment also brings increased national visibility to Louisiana’s higher education and workforce efforts. As part of the Executive Committee, Dr. Smith will collaborate with college presidents and chancellors from across the nation to influence policy discussions, share best practices, and help shape innovative workforce solutions at a national scale.
For Baton Rouge and the broader region, the recognition underscores the growing impact of Baton Rouge Community College as a leader in workforce responsiveness, economic mobility, and educational innovation.
Dr. Smith’s appointment further solidifies his standing as one of the leading voices in community college education and workforce strategy in the country.
