When a crime is initially reported to a CSA, they should ask the reporting party if they would like to report it to the College’s Department of Public Safety. If they agree, contact BRCC’s Department of Public Safety at 225.216.8001. If CSAs have firsthand knowledge and confirmation that the reporting party filed a police report with the College’s police department, they are not obligated to complete and submit a CSA Crime Reporting Form. However, if the reporting party only expresses their intent to file a police report with the College’s police department and CSAs have not confirmed a police report was filed, then the CSA will be required to complete and submit a CSA Crime Report Form. When in doubt, a CSA Crime Reporting Form should be completed and submitted.
- CSA Crime Reporting Form: CSAs are encouraged to report Clery Act crimes reported to them in a timely manner to the BRCC Department of Public Safety, via CSA Crime Reporting Form. The CSA Crime Reporting Forms are made available online and go directly to BRCC's Public Safety Department.
- Information Gathering: CSAs should obtain information that would provide sufficient detail to properly classify the incident when interacting with the crime reporting party.
- Identifying Information: CSAs should only include identifying information if the crime reporting party is willing to provide such information.
- Investigate: CSAs should not investigate the crime or attempt to determine whether a crime took place.
Anonymous Reporting
If the crime reporting party does not want to disclose identifying information, the report must be completed and submitted anonymously. BRCC permits victims or witnesses to report crimes to CSAs on a voluntary, anonymous basis but encourages individuals who report crime to provide identifying information.
Since all police reports are public records under state law, BRCC’s Department of Public Safety cannot hold reports of crime in confidence; however, the exception related to anonymous reporting involves Campus Security Authorities. Whether CSA reports are anonymous or include identifying information and are made in good faith, all criminal incidents classified under the Clery Act are included in the College’s Annual Security Report.
