September is Campus Safety Month at Baton Rouge Community College. Take a few minutes this month to review simple steps you can take to help keep yourself and others safe on campus and when traveling to and from BRCC. Know Your Campus Be aware of your surroundings and know where to find help when you need it. Know the locations of nearby Blue Emergency Posts. Call Campus Police or 911 in an emergency. Save important campus emergency numbers in your phone. Use well-lit paths, especially when walking after dark. Let friends or family know your plans. Trust your instincts. If something doesn't feel right, move to a safer location and seek assistance. Practice Rideshare Safety Using Uber, Lyft or another rideshare service? Before getting into a vehicle: Confirm the driver's name and the vehicle's make and model. Check the driver's rating in the rideshare app. If you're uncomfortable, cancel the ride and request another. Share your trip details through the app with someone you trust, or send them the vehicle's license plate information. When riding alone, sit in the back seat. Follow your route using your own maps app and pay attention to unexpected route changes. Know What to Do During an Active Threat Knowing your options before an emergency can help you respond more quickly. Remember Run. Hide. Fight. RUN to safety if a clear escape path exists.HIDE in a secure location if you cannot safely escape.FIGHT only as a last resort if you are in immediate danger. Campus safety is a shared responsibility. Stay alert, know your resources and take time during Campus Safety Month to make sure you're prepared.
