Associate of Arts
The Associate of Arts (AA) in American Sign Language Studies at Baton Rouge Community College provides a foundation in American Sign Language (ASL) communication skills and awareness of Deaf culture and community, preparing students for advanced study in ASL.
This degree focuses on practical ASL conversation skills, including ASL to spoken English and vice versa, and offers insights into Deaf culture. The program culminates in a practicum course involving direct engagement with the Deaf community.
Program Requirements
- A cumulative GPA of 2.00 or better in all credit hours used towards the degree.
- Earn a “C” or better in major courses including ENGL 1013 and ENGL 1023.
- Complete at least 12 hours at the 2000 level.

- Demonstrate fluency in ASL in various settings.
- Express awareness and sensitivity to Deaf history, culture, and perspectives.
- Apply ASL communication skills to careers in education, government, social services, and more.
